If this was my customer and with my knowledge, I would have thumbed up some JB SteelStik and let them go on vacation. No need to drain the oil just mead the stuff with your fingers and rub it on. I use this stuff for similar repairs and it works. Don't believe me? Just ask Dale Jarrett the nascar diver as his oil pan became cracked during a race and the pit crew put some of this stuff on during a pitstop and guess what it sealed it.

Looking at the close up you or I could also see a crack starting on the other side near the plug. So hopefully the client heeded your warning - But Yikes Yeah I sure wouldn't drive with a leak like that

Mustangs had that dual sump oil pan. I can't say I've ever seen a pan crack like that.

Just throw some flex seal or jb weld and good as new or even better 🤣🤣🤣🤣. No but seriously just tell the owner to rent a car if they really need to travel and leave the drip pan for repair.

Hey, I have a 2005 mini cooper sport and my transmission fluid is leaking into my coolant. Can anyone walk me through on how to fix it?

It is a great problem on shaft driven motorcycles because the wide final gear-oil filler plug is hollow and made from soft aluminum. Even the bolt head in the middle is hollow. Then a "knows it all" comes and tightens the filler plug with a torque wrench. All bolts tightened to specifications by the book they say. Not realizing that those are dry moments. Wet from the most slippery and metal sticking oil, it takes considerably less force. I have to lengthen the socket wrench with a pipe, to be able to get engine oil drain plugs out when it is new to me. I can imagine that people would let the shop loosen the drain for them, so that the situation you describe can be avoided. Only not from a filler plug but also because a damaged thread for the drain! You may not be able to secure a bolt back in. It is good to know that you can almost always remove plugs that haven't been tightened by momentum taken from the manual. Ask mechanics to mount them by simple means, not using any torque wrench and with the fist closest to the bolt. Perhaps they will be surprised that all momentum's, without notice, are dry.

I had this happen to me once, but not that bad. I bought a new car, and now I bring my own torque wrench with me. Fords wants 20 Ft#, and that is what I torque it too. Never go to a quick change place. BAD IDEA.

Now Kenny you are showing your age with the double hump ford oil pan. I had a customer with a fleet that had those engines.

Hot and cold cycles plus the vibrations you mentioned make it a don't drive and get fixed deal. People don't get the severity or importance of the situation. Listen to the man!!

I'm a factory motorcycle tech and one of the guys came and said the stator I just replaced was leaking. Nope lol the case had been hit and cracked.

Crack is bad to smoke. Crack is also bad for your oil pan.

Why not have every vehicle with 2 part oil drain plug. Hex adapter threads into pan. It has female side that a hex plug threads into. So when removing you hold the adapter in the pan and remove plug. Careless cross threading means replacing adapter, not the pan, assuming you don't screw that up. But it's only in replacing adapter that pan threads are exposed

I couldnt tell you how many oil changes I have done and I thought I saw it all. Never seen this one before. Im a retired mechanic and I would let customers watch. We were in the deep country and country folks like to watch you work and ask silly questions sometimes. My favorite was always the wrong type of threads on a bolt crammed into the oil drain hole. If I saw a drain bolt crooked in a pan I wouldnt touch the vehicle. I learned the hard way to really look at a drain bolt!!LOLOLOL

Would be better for all of us if that thing wasn't dripping all over the road.

Hi Kenny, the first mistake on the part of the customer is that they bought a Kia Sorento. You have inspected well and caught the leak as it was happening and with your massive amount of experience, you could actually show us the crack where the oil is leaking from. It is time to park it, order a new oil pan and be done with it. If I was a real gambler (and I'm not), I might remove the oil pan, clean it thoroughly and JB Weld the crack but that is iffy as the entire engine is flexing under load and the crack could come back or even as you said crack like a piece of glass and it goes any distance it wants. Yes, the best possible solution is to park it on your lot there, order a new oil pan, install it and top off or change the oil, charge the customer accordingly and tell them that they can rest easy knowing that they had you as their technician and repair person. Had my timing chains replaced about 15 thousand miles ago now it's making noise again sounds like the chain again not sure though it's a 2011 HHR 2.2 engine.

My coworker took his Impreza to a Grease Monkey. They drained his transmission fluid instead of his oil and didn't refill it until it was much too late. The transmission failed a month or so later and he ended up having to replace it out of pocket (of course the shop told him to pound sand). Never go to quick lube places, EVER. They are staffed by people who are unqualified and do not care.

Did you move the crank pulley back to zero or did you leave it at 10 ?

It actually makes total sense if the computer ignored the start request because it couldn't positively determine what gear the transmission is in and there's a safety hazard. Most likely, the computer went into a faulted state that has to be cleared manually. Neutral safety switch, if it has one, is where I'd look. Same for the shifter cable and linkage. Anytime a no crank no start is present and the vehicle isnt completely dead electrically, the first step is to manually shift to neutral and see if that gets it to start. If it does, you've narrowed down the problem. One time a customer of mine had the same complaint with his 2000 expedition. Turns out a couple bolts for the shift lever assembly loosened up over time and needed tightening. Easy fix!

My mate had similar, luckily I caught her as she fell . Turned out it was Ménière’s disease .
